"Moonshiner" review on "Quicksand"
Reprinted From May 1999 Issue of "Moonshiner Bluegrass Journal" "Quicksand"
Southern California is no longer a barren land of Bluegrass Music. Listen to Quicksand,
a new release from the rising record company called Tricopolis Records. It is an authentic and strict bluegrass recording by singer and flatpicker Mike Nadolson. Joining him are David Dias, John Moore, Kenny Blackwell, Bob Applebaum, Dean Knight, David Richardson and Walden Dahl. Also the multi-talented musician, Dennis Caplinger of Bluegrass Etc, joins to add more color and flavor. It is fun to listen to a fierce battle among the instruments on "Nine Pound Hammer". I addition to traditional songs as "Someone Took My Place With You" by Lester Flatt, and "Kentucky Girl" by Charlie Monroe, this CD has a nice blend of contemporary songs as well. "In The Gravel Yard" and some others by songwriters such as Wayne Taylor, Chris Jones and Phil Rosenthal. Mike's flatpicking technique is convincingly displayed in "Red Haired Boy" and in the title cut, "Quicksand" by David Dias. After all they have a different taste in Southern California Bluegrass but on this CD
they play and sound fresh and authentic. Moonshiner Web Site: http://www.kh.rim.or.jp/~bluegras/ This is all in Japanese but there is enough English you can figure out what you are doing most of the time.
