Interesting Facts About Sleep And Dreams

Dreams are a phenomenon very little known about as definite facts. Why we have them, what causes us to see particular things and storylines, are questions everyone has. Dreams are fascinating, and studied vastly around the world; many attempts to explain them, yet there is still very little defined as facts about them.

Dreams form a complex subject because the study of dreams; Oneirology, overlaps with the study of the brain and brain activity; neurology.

Dreams are a combination of ideas, memories, sensations, colors, images and emotions.

Since so little is known about them, we have brought in the experts to share some interesting facts about dreams with us.

Blind People Dream

“Apparently, it doesn’t make much sense that people who are blind by birth have dreams, but it is a fact. Even blind people tend to have dreams but a little different from how a regular person dreams. They just see images in the way their brain has imagined things. The figures they think of when they touch something or hear a voice are the ones that are repeated when they are subconscious.” Anastasia B., Psychologist.

Muscles Paralyze While Dreaming

“There are a few stages of sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is an intense one when we tend to get into a deep sleep. During this time, our muscles are paralyzed so that we don’t move our bodies and act as our brain wants to in our dreams.”  Anastasia B., Psychologist.

Our Dreams Can Have Themes

“This is pretty common that people tend to see dreams in a recurring manner. The more they think about something or stress about themselves, their subconscious will bring it back even when they are asleep. This way it will lead to a specific theme, and you can enjoy different aspects of that. Mostly it happens before an exam or a stressful presentation that you’ve been worried about.”

What Causes Vivid Dreams?

“While a vivid, memorable dream might seem like a random occurrence, there are actually quite a few factors that can trigger intense dreams. One of the most surprising things that could cause vivid dreams: eating spicy food before bed. One study in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that college students who ate spicy food had bizarre dreams afterward. Although this study couldn’t prove eating spicy food causes weird dreams, the researchers hypothesized that these foods could have influenced the college students’ dreams by causing gut issues. Another reason why you might have out-of-this-world dreams after eating spicy foods? Spices increase your metabolism and body temperature, which, in turn, could boost your brain activity during REM sleep, the sleep stage where most of your dreaming occurs.”

Difference Between Men and Women Dreams

“Men’s dreams are often related to attacks, while women’s dreams are related to interpersonal relationships. There are always different studies used to reveal the differences between men and women, and from the perspective of dreams and dreams, there are indeed differences in different genders. For example, men tend to have more dreams that emphasize fighting, aggressive, or violent themes. On the other hand, women have a higher degree of fear of rejection and other more subtle concerns than men; women are more likely to dream about interpersonal relationships.”

We are Hardwired NOT to Act Out Our Dreams

“One of the more interesting facts that I have read about is the concept that we are actually hardwired NOT to act out our dreams. Some people do, but this is actually extremely dangerous and rare, something more of a condition that affects men from 50 years old onwards. Acting out our dreams can be dangerous, we can hit people, hurt ourselves and so forth. The condition is called RBD and is treated with medication. I am especially interested in lucid dreaming and being able to control our dreams, something that every one of us can do when we train hard enough at it. We mostly believe that dreaming is an unconscious, involuntary state of being that we ALL experience, every night (the latter is true) but we can actually exert a significant level of control over it. Going to sleep isn't the end of the day for some, it is actually a period of time to embark on some serious hard work and emotional progression, where you can work through mental health issues and so forth.”

Some More Facts About Dreams

REM sleep was discovered in the early 1950s, which is when we began studying dreams. The average person has about three to five dreams per night. Oneirology is a Greek word that means: the scientific study of dreams. There's a difference between nightmares and bad dreams. The key difference is that in a nightmare one experiences a threat and the sleeper can awaken. Bad dreams, on the other hand, reflect interpersonal conflict.”
